Without a doubt, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is the center of media attention now, but summer is the high season for many sports and national, regional and local matches attract enthusiastic audiences. Wherever people gather, have a good time and food and drinks are served, there is a need for an efficient waste management solution.
St Helens Rugby Football Club Limited, the legal entity of the professional English rugby league club St Helens R.F.C. based in Merseyside in North West England, is no exception. The club has a long and glorious history dating back to its formation in 1873 and since then, St Helens R.F.C. has won 69 trophies, and become the most successful club in the summer era of Rugby League. It operates and plays at the BrewDog Stadium with maximum capacity for 18,000 spectators.
Initially, Orwak Easi UK interested the club in trialing the compact size Orwak 3110 baler and the team were so convinced by the immediate results that they expanded the approach to cover both cardboard and plastic waste; including pint pots!
Considering the waste volumes at hand and facilitating the separation at source and recycling of the different types of materials, Orwak Easi advised the club to switch to the twin chamber baler 9020S. The estimation was a reduction of 6–8 x 1100 L bins per week and just four weeks later the results are convincing:
- The bin count is reduced by 15 per week
- General waste collections are cut by 50 %

Furthermore, the club has now added a third chamber to bale cans and drive even greater waste reduction and recycling. Following a 10-year partnership with the Scottish beer giant BrewDog, the stadium serves various BrewDog beers, so the third baler chamber for cans will most likely be put to good use!
The installation at St Helens Rugby Football Club is a great example of what can be achieved with the right solution, collaboration, and commitment.
