Ferrero, an Italian family company since 1946, is one of the world’s largest sweet-packaged food companies with over 35 iconic brands known globally. Ferrero’s vast premium chocolate factory in Belgium invested in a new high-capacity compaction solution to deal with its waste streams. The factory handles 1500 tons of recyclables per year and Veolia, their waste management consultant, recommended the powerful 80 ton fully automated Orwak Horizontal baler 800 ATH, for effective compaction and baling of the materials.

The recyclables consist of cardboard boxes, flattened cardboard and plastic, which are fed manually or by forklift onto a conveyor belt or loaded by bin lifter. To avoid infeed blockages, the conveyor is equipped with a bar and a rebuff roller. Those are practical options to provide an even waste stream, when big chunks of material are loaded onto the conveyor.

Thanks to the high compaction ratio, the horizontal baler produces dense bales that release storage space on site and reduce the waste transport significantly. The customer: “An efficient and sustainable solution for an increased recycling rate and more profitable waste management.”

Vertical balers for sorting and compaction at source

Ferrero Belgium was already well acquainted with Orwak’s compaction solutions, as no less than 15 units of the multi-chamber baler 9020S and 9 units of the most compact vertical balers 3110/3120 are strategically located throughout the factory. It is an efficient waste solution for sorting and compaction at source. Plastic packaging and aluminum foil from the famous Kinder eggs are two frequent waste types in these balers.
