M SUR, a key player in waste management and recovery for municipalities in the southern area of Greater Santiago, acquired Orwak’s POWER 3820 balers to make the recycling operations and material recovery more efficient. SULO Chile arranged a training session for M SUR staff, covering equipment operation, safe usage, and best practices to maximize performance. Compacting and baling the collected recyclables promote sustainable resource management and create a positive impact in the communities.

A key role in collecting recyclables

M SUR in Chile is an association of municipalities dedicated to promoting recycling and sustainable resource management in their region. It coordinates waste management, recycling programs and circular economy initiatives across multiple member communes in the southern sector of the Santiago metropolitan area. M SUR unites dozens of municipalities and plays a key role in the implementation of Chile’s Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) law* in those municipalities.

Acting as an authorized manager, M SUR oversees the collection and transport of packaging waste as well as the pre-treatment of materials before it is sent to recovery. Furthermore, the association collaborates closely with grassroots recyclers from the various municipalities, who assist in material collection and the implementation of the REP Law.

Convincing compaction with POWER

There is a large population in this metropolitan area, and the association handles substantial quantities of packaging material from the collections. Orwak’s sister company SULO Chile, introduced the solution to compact and bale the material at the M SUR collection centers. The association has invested in four high-capacity POWER 3820 balers from Orwak. This model is designed with an extra wide loading gate that is very practical when effortlessly loading bulky waste.

SULO Chile’s team arranged a training session to educate operators and staff, covering equipment operation, safe usage, and best practices to maximize performance. The staff was highly motivated and enthusiastic about testing the new equipment!

Proud to provide solutions that create a positive impact

Cardboard, PET and plastic wraps are the most common recyclables and the materials are now compacted with convincing results in the POWER balers. The work runs smoothly and the material handling is much easier when just disposing of the recyclables in the open machine. When closing the shutter, the baler starts automatically, compacting the material and then opens the shutter again ready for another load! The volume reduction optimizes transport of the recyclables to various recycling plants. The positive experiences with the first balers pave the way for more investments in equipment for additional collection hubs.

The implementation of the compaction solution aligns with the challenges driving the REP Law helping to improve the efficiency of recycling operations and material recovery. Many thanks to M SUR for placing their trust in SULO Chile and the Orwak balers. We are proud to provide technology that strengthens the circular economy and creates a positive impact in the communities. COMPACT IS IMPACT.

*The REP Law (Spanish: Ley de Responsabilidad Extendida del Productor or Extended Producer Responsibility Law) is
an environmental policy and regulatory framework that makes manufacturers and importers financially and physically
responsible for the waste generated by the products they place on the market.
