After installing two compact size Orwak balers, Coopers Fire, a manufacturer of fire prevention equipment in the UK, now deals directly with a recycling company for the cardboard and soft plastic waste, reducing the cost and carbon emissions in the recycling process by a significant amount.

Coopers Fire in Waterlooville – Hampshire – UK is a leading manufacturer, installer and service provider of automatic fire curtains, fire barriers and smoke curtain systems for over 30 years. The innovative smoke barriers and fire curtains, manufactured in Coopers Fire’s plants in the UK, protect many prestigious buildings in the world.

When Orwak’s sister company Orwak Easi UK reached out to Coopers Fire to talk about waste management and recycling solutions, it became evident from the start that the environmental credentials are key to Coopers Fire.

Every month they carefully monitor the waste streams and the proportion of recyclables being diverted from general waste. These numbers are reported and compared with the previous month. At that point of the initial contact, the recycling rate was already about 90 %, which is impressive.

When the option to bale recyclables came up in the conversation, Coopers Fire meant that it was not a feasible solution for them, because they had already looked into a mill-size baler, which would have been too big for their volumes of waste.

When Melissa Phillips from Orwak Easi UK explained that over 75 % of their customers have the small to medium size balers from the range, Coopers Fire agreed to a free trial of ORWAK COMPACT 3120, a baler with a small footprint. Simon Hall, Health & Safety and Environmental Advisor, comments:

“We had looked at balers before, but these were mill-size balers, and it was not a viable option for our company size. Orwak has been able to provide the perfect size balers for our cardboard and soft plastic waste streams.”

After evaluating the outcome, Coopers Fire decided to install two balers of the same model. They were previously filling twelve 1100 L bins with polythene and a front-end loading skip weekly with cardboard. The new compaction solution on the other hand cut their carbon footprint on recyclable waste by a substantial amount. Simon Hall again:

“From an off-chance meeting to having 2 balers installed, we have cut our reliance on our waste carrier along with enhancing our green initiatives. We can now deal directly with a recycling company for our cardboard and soft plastic waste, reducing the cost and carbon emissions in the recycling process by a huge amount.”
