The busy Port of Antwerp in Belgium is the second largest seaport in Europe and a vital hub for cargo from all continents. One huge warehouse in the harbor area stores coffee beans from all over the Southern Hemisphere. They are fresh green beans delivered in jute sacks on pallets freighted in sea containers.
In the warehouse, the coffee beans are repacked in Big Bags for transportation by railroad to a coffee roasting factory in Italy, where the green beans are roasted, grinded and transformed into delicious coffee of a famous brand!
The repacking in the warehouse in Antwerp is a fully automated process, where the horizontal baler 40-ATH from Orwak plays an important part in collecting, compacting and baling the empty jute sacks. It is a 40-ton baler with automated horizontal bale binding by steel wire. The highly compacted and neatly tied bales are sent to recycling where the material is granulated and used in tapestry.
The horizontal baler was installed by Veolia and provides the customer with an efficient, sustainable and profitable solution to the packaging waste in the coffee bean warehouse. The impressive volume reduction saves space and improves logistics significantly, when transporting the bales, and the pure fractions of jute are readily accepted in the recycling industry.
